The maternal fetal practice was started in July 2013 in the Panorama Mediclinic because of its excellent reputation for patient care, central location and vision for world-class service.

Dr Lou Pistorius

Lou (2)Lou completed his undergraduate medical studies in Pretoria, and specialized as  gynaecologist in Stellenbosch.  After a period of time in academic medicine in Pretoria,  he worked as obstetrician-gynaecologist with special interest in maternal and foetal  medicine in the Sandton Mediclinic.  In 2004 he went to Utrecht, the Netherlands, for  fellowship training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine.  In addition to registering as  Maternal and Fetal Medicine Specialist (“Perinatologist”) he completed a PhD study on the imaging of the foetal brain in 2008.


Dr Cathy Cluver

Cathy completed her undergraduate medical studies and postgraduate studies at  Stellenbosch University. She qualified as an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist cum Laude in  2011 and was awarded the Daubenton Medal for outstanding results in the Fellowship  examination of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa and  the medal for the Best Postgraduate Student for a Structures Masters Qualification at  Stellenbosch University.

She is currently completing the certificate in Maternal-Fetal Medicine after doing a years fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia in Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2013.  Her PhD revolves around looking for a possible treatment for pre-eclampsia.

She is registered for first trimester screening with the Fetal Medicine Foundation and is a member of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the South African Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the South African Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecoloy.

She is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the Stellenbosch Medical School. She has published over 20 peer reviewed articles and has written chapters for undergraduate and postgraduate textbooks. She is also a reviewer for several scientific journals including the Cochrane library.


Dr Lynel Nel

LynelLynel is a General Practitioner with a special interest in Fetal and Maternal  medicine. She qualified from the University of Stellenbosch in 2004. She received  intensive training at Tygerberg Hospital in the Cardiology department in adult  echocardiography. Recently she worked at Grootte Schuur hospital in the  Aneasthetic department where she combined previous anaesthetic experience and  echocardiography by working in the Cardiac theatres with Professor Justiaan  Swanevelder (leader in cardiac echo in anaesthetics.) She was part of a research team leaded by an expert obstetric anaesthetist from Melbourne, Alicia Dennis. They did research using echocardiography to assess haemodynamic changes in various groups of high risk obstetric patients with special focus on pre-ecclampsia.. As a consequence of this research, several research papers have been accepted for publication in well known medical journals. Lou trained her intensively one on one in fetal and maternal medicine and she has also completed several certificates of competencies of the fetal medicine foundation and is accredited to perform the Nuchal translucency scan.  She officially joins the practice in April 2015.


Heidi Nolan

HeidiHeidi has completed her postgrad studies at Cape Peninsula University of  Technologies (Tygerberg Campus) in Diagnostic Radiology (Diploma) in 2009 and  Ultrasonographer (B-Tech) in 2011. She is currently working as Sonographer at the  University of Stellenbosch,  Safe Passage Study,  where they focus on the in-vitro neuro  development of fetuses. The aim of their research is to detect fetuses with features of  FAS early in pregnancy and to identify pregnancies at risk of SIDS and pre – eclampsia.
